I have a salaried job at a place about an hour commute one way from my home. I put in my 40 hours a week, do my work as directed, then I go home and run my own small business with freelance work. When at work I am focused, helpful and not a slacker by any means. This is my first job out of college and I’ve been here a year.

The company pays us very little, just above minimum wage, which is why I freelance on the side for more income. Everyone is pretty unhappy here and my coworkers hate it too. We all talk about how we don’t get treated fairly etc. but they are still saying they’ll stay for some PTO time.

The holiday season has put the company under a lot of pressure (we are a tiny company), and the owners/my manager have asked people to stay late for no extra pay, just trading it for PTO time next year. I responded that I couldn’t due to prior obligations. (I have work and deadlines that I need to get to, and have to prepare for a job interview on Monday which I won’t be coming into work for, but I obviously didn’t tell them any of these details). Now I’m getting dirty looks/attitudes from all my co workers for not “being a team player”.

They can’t fire me for not working extra hours. But I still get nervous I’ll be in trouble. I caved and offered to stay an extra hour today.
