I moved here right before Hurricane Florence and even just a year later I’m already tired of either trying the Black Cat Shoppe or driving an hour to the nearest well-stocked witchcraft store. I can’t imagine now frustrated those of you who have been here for decades must be! So, after months of serious thought, I have a question to pose to my fellow witches: Will you help support Familiars, the metaphysical store I am planning to open here in town?
The basic pitch is really just, ‘hey guys let’s have a metaphysical store,’ but then because I’m extra on a deeply personal level I wanted to lean into the kitsch of it. Think, like, an end goal of some Victorian house painted dark grey, the garden is full of black plants (except for the herbs, of course), a skull door knocker…just totally, completely stereotypically ‘witchy.’ (That end goal is years away, but you get the vibe from that image I hope.) Then I want to add in foster animals, particularly the ‘unlovables’ at the Humane Society. Black cats, pitbulls, three-legged, one-eyed–the animals people are less likely to adopt. I want to give them a temporary home with the intent of helping them find their forever homes with the people who meet them in the store. Essentially, I want to be where people here can come to get their magickal tools–and that includes their familiar.
I’m still working on finding a place for the store, and we’re at least three months from opening, but I’ve been preparing since last September and we’re getting closer. So here’s my question to all of you: If a store like the one I just described opened up in New Bern, would you shop there? If a store like this offered things like classes and meetups, would you be interested? Where would you want this store to be located? And, lastly, if you’re looking for a job would you be interested in applying to a shop like this? Particularly with the knowledge that the business isn’t yet able to offer benefits, and so would be best suited as a part time job to supplement income until the store has enough revenue to fix that issue?
I didn’t mean to write such an info-dump, lol, but I feel like New Bern is on the edge of becoming something. Like a bubble about to pop, you know? I’m opening a small Facebook market for some handmade items (mainly spellbooks I’ve written, but also rune stones, candles, etc.) in the next two weeks, so I’ll keep you updated. I’m sorry this was so long, but I really appreciate you reading it! Blessed be <3
