I own a small videography company in Michigan, an at-will employment state. We’re growing slowly, and we’re looking at bringing on some additional videographers in the coming year. A large number of existing members of our team are part of the LGBTQ+ community, and we also film a number of same-sex weddings. It’s important to me that all of our team members vibe well together, and I don’t want to keep track of which videographers will agree to film gay weddings and which ones won’t. My business partner suggested asking for interviewees thoughts on the LGBT community in our interviews, and not hire anyone who is homophobic. My concern is, are we risking someone calling foul and pulling the “religious freedom” card on us? Do we just need to be more careful about how we ask the question, like “would you be comfortable filming same-sex weddings and working with LGBT individuals?” Are we legally allowed to broach the subject at all? Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer! – by hq overview pessimisticpaperclip – –
