What are the best google display network placements for a Saas product that is on the more expensive side and starts with a free trial? Should I exclude certain apps like games? Optimize for desktop? we have been doing well on search and fb and not spending a ton on display and im looking to expand our presence there in the right places! any advice would be appreciated

how about start w/ remarkting first before going to totally cold traffic. Good way to practice while avoiding run away spend and no leads.

You could really tailor it to the buyer’s journey/decision making process

I’d start with retargeting and go from there.

In general we exclude all traffic from mobile apps, and bid down on mobile and tablet. I’d probably mirror what you’re doing for search with your device-level bid adjustments.

If things aren’t going super well, you can layer on audiences or demographic targeting onto your campaigns.

Start with remarketing, as others have said. I tend to focus on desktop. I tend to exclude all mobile apps. Be sure to avoid the ‘automatic’ expanded targeting options, so it strictly IS remarketing.

For some placements, one ‘trick’ that I like to do is target sub-reddits – which have some GDN inventory (ie, http://www.reddit.com/r/ppc). It’s pretty low volume, but it’s a solid targeting tactic for B2B compared to a lot of the targeting options the Display Network offers.

This is a good spot to test a different kind of customer journey than trying to go straight to a sign up, like a freebie report offer sent to your email. But if you are an with an agency the eventual attribution can be a concern

You’re on the right track. The decision makers aren’t likely actively researching SaaS solutions on FB, so display is going to get a lot more of those potential customers in your remarketing lists.

If computers are the only devices that convert in analytics, regardless of source/medium, then that’s just more evidence of who your target market is.

It’s a long, multi-channel process, but yes – Display will get you the most bang for the buck to build enough list volume to refine your audience targeting.
