If you are worried about payments and getting the services without a hassle, use freelancer or upwork as they have protections for both you and your freelancer. It comes with a small price (25% in extra fees) but if it’s a small project it’s not usually that much.

Developer here. First of all I don’t know who you host with but make sure you revoke credentials after they deploy it. After that they can’t take your site down (most developers are just like you and just want to make a living). They should be understanding of that.

Do note as a developer I require full payment before I transfer site as the code is more valuable to you than me. Even if I were malicious I don’t really gain anything if I were to keep your site, it’s extremely unlikely they’d want to run it without being paid for it as we all have our own projects.

PayPal will work fine, if anything they side with you over the developer. But I refuse to use them after being screwed pretty hard. I would dissuade you from using upwork because they take a huge cut and you’ll likely be compensating for that. PayPal or just paying whatever they invoice you with is your best bet, when working with shady or low cost developers you’ll have a ton of issues with bad code rather than them stealing your IP.

See if they use fiverr / upwork / those types of programs. That’s the safest way if you don’t know the person.

Highly recommend using Upwork, freelancer.com, or Fiverr for any transactions

PayPal has quite a bit of protection but I think it is only 30 days after payment is made. That is a lot better than any other method that I know of; however.

If you are into five figures, I would look into a contract.
