I’m 4 years into my career, I make 70k in NY. I aspire for more money and responsibility. I won’t sugarcoat it, all I do is write blogs and product copy. That’s it. To progress, I need experience creating email, social, paid media, scripts, etc. Every company I have worked for, and applied for, does not offer to train me in these skills even when asked. They prefer to silo employees into their own skill sets, except of course for the managers who miraculously had all the skills before joining. How do I progress? I have taken a college course from an accredited school in my area and it didn’t teach me anything beyond academics, and academics mean nothing. These companies want experience. Experience, mind you, that they are not willing to give themselves. I find that even offering your services as a freelancer is pointless, as people want you to have some level of base skill if they going to hire you no matter how low your rates are. Are managers and directors simply lucky enough where they had worked in a position early in their career that did teach them these skills, or am I missing something? – by /hq/bigbugmaloo – –
