So, about a month and a half ago, the parcel of land next to our store was bought by a local business, and as of two weeks ago, they’ve begun tilling the ground, and digging to put in the foundation for said business. To do this, they had to close off the small sidestreet that ran next to the land. But we had a rather nasty storm come through that dumped a foot of snow, so they haven’t been doing very much lately.

Naturally, the entire town uses our parking lot as a shortcut to get onto the sidestreet so that they can avoid some of the heavy traffic off the busier street. Now that its closed off, people are freaking out. It’s just fine by me because its cut down on the amount of people who fly into the parking lot, doing 40 mph, trying to hit other cars, pedestrians and customers. It has also helped with the amount of idiots doing cookies on the ice, attempting to hit parked cars. But ever since the road closure, everyone and their mother keeps coming into OUR store complaining about it. I had one yesterday.

Woman: Why is that street closed!?!

Me: Well ma’am, that parcel of land has been sold off, and now they’re going to build on it.

    Woman: What are they building?

Me: I have no idea, ma’am, I don’t own the land.

Woman: That doesn’t mean they have to close down the road!

Me: Well, if they’re digging a sewer, then that would be reason enough.

Woman: Well YOU need to tell THEM to open up the road.

Me: That would be impossible ma’am.

    Woman: And why is that?

Me: As I’ve said before, I don’t own the land, and I don’t work for the construction company either.

Woman: Well, I’m going to do something about it! I’m going to tell someone at city hall, I know people there! This is ridiculous.

Good luck, lady. I’m sorry you can’t use your shortcut, but THAT’S NOT MY FAULT.
