    Hi everyone!

I’ve been freelancing as a web designer working with either Divi, Elementor or Webflow for a little while now, but I’d like to take it to the next level and start making my own themes for WordPress. I love coding and using WYSIWYG-editors just doesn’t feel the same.

I know how to code HTML, CSS, as well as some JS and PHP, and I’d say I’m probably about an intermediate level coder. I pick up new things pretty easily and enjoy coding. I just don’t know how to go about making my own themes for clients. How do I do that?

Any help, tips, links to great tutorials, books, pointers etc are greatly appreciated!

Use underscores as a starting theme: [https://underscores.me/](https://underscores.me/)

Learn the WordPress template hierarchy: [https://developer.wordpress.org/themes/basics/template-hierarchy/](https://developer.wordpress.org/themes/basics/template-hierarchy/)

Learn how to name your php files: [https://developer.wordpress.org/themes/template-files-section/page-template-files/](https://developer.wordpress.org/themes/template-files-section/page-template-files/)

The difference between a WordPress site using a custom built theme vs one using a ‘premium’ theme and a page builder is night and day, they’re so much lighter, load x10 faster, break less, and you have far more control over the style.

    Edit: more info

Once you’re ready to dive a bit deeper, look in to the ‘CPT UI’ and ‘ACF’ plugins.
