Hi everyone! Quick question, if you’d oblige me — I’ve been back and forth with people (some of which were my web host’s technical service reps) about the best way to set up a staging environment for my WordPress website. I went with the subdomain approach, and installed a fresh copy of WordPress over there. The problem is that I wasn’t too confident in being able to do ~all~ of the copying/editing of files to make this a direct clone, and using a plugin to do the work started causing lots of hiccups with things like security plugins and other bells and whistles, mostly because of conflicts and some licenses being inherent to my production URL, not the sandbox’ one. I’m left with essentially starting from scratch on the sandbox, and manually making the approved changes on the production site manually, inside of WordPress, on Sunday evenings (hello!). This is the simplest path forward that I could think of and the tech support folks I contacted about it seemed to imply the same thing. However, it doesn’t “feel” like best practices because there’s an awfully congested workflow in starting from scratch/manually porting over content inside of WordPress (just copy/pasting), and I question the “integrity” of the sandbox environment because it ~isn’t~ technically a clone. I’m getting very conflicting information online from articles, lurking forums, tech support, etc. Anybody have some personal experience or ideas they’d be so kind as to share with me? I’d appreciate it a lot. Cheers, Dave PS – If you answer, consider that I know enough to run a small website reasonably well and to have gotten myself this far on the subdomain issue. If it comes down to doing anything overly complex for a “hobbyist,” I very well may be uncomfortable doing it. I will try my best to follow your input, though. Thanks again! – by hq overview ExcitingCategory – –
