I realize this could/should be posted on a different sub but I’m interested in WordPress specific advice. We have a dedicated server with 60+ WP and WooCommerce sites on it for the last couple of years with no issues. Recently a client announced a 24 hour, limited edition type sale. The response was so large that it crashed our server for a few hours. Typically our server load sits between 0.20-0.70, during the sale the load hit 125.00 before crashing. All of our sites have a caching plugin (WP Rocket), an image compression plugin, all sites run through either the free or Business tier Cloudflare, some sites like the one that crashed the server also run through MaxCDN, we also disable WP-cron and set a real cron job for every couple of hours. These steps aren’t enough for that type of traffic spike and any sort of managed WP type hosting would have resulted in the same thing. What other steps do you guys take to manage server load during extreme traffic spikes? – by /hq/vstheworldagain – –
