Hey r/webdev, I had a quesiton. I’m more a mid level developer trying to get into more freelance and consulting work. I’m very much interested in software architecture, and any books/resources are welcome. Let’s say I have a client that wants a custom small/medium “project planning” tool, where users can fill out and track set forms (preset documents), register an event, message users in a private chat, log in/out, have some google maps functionality (so geocoding). Let’s say each customer group has an absolute overestimated maximum of 50 users. Typically this is a 100k+ project at least at a company would be my guess. How would you break down the price into small incremental fixed prices. Let’s assume there is a design already, including a live prototype for the UX. It’s very difficult to do fixed price. There is a discovery phase, but there are repeated discovery, prototype, then fully implement, not to mention testing, user testing, possible ui/ux design, client meetings, calls, and repeat those cycles. Has anyone taken on a project like this? What do you charge? How do you break it down, if not for the sake of the client for yourself? Could definitely teach an entire course or more on just this. – by /hq/mind_over_machine – –
