Keep doing that to the point where you can create those designs without looking at other sites. Recreating is just an effective way of learning.
I believe that many designers work like this tho. From my experience, many clients want their website to look like competitor xyz, just a little different. Once in a while theres is a client that is really open to new design ideas, but they’re rare.
